Here are huge vats where the components of the mortar are held. The mortar, evidently, is mixed when an order is placed, not before. In fact, Sue, who works at the front desk was concerned when we showed our blog to her! She said the mortar should match the concrete in color! Chuck (not our Chuck...this was a mason from this vendor), who'd come out to show us how to use the materials, had said they color match the repair mortar to existing concrete. We don't need that, as we paint our Stupas, and rather than pay for an unnecessary process, we just order the base material. I wanted to be sure to make that clear for Sue's sake! She didn't want the world to think their material requires painting over! They service clients like the U.S. Capitol and the National Cathedral, so they're not some small time supplier (just because we're a small job don't get that idea..these materials are top of the line!). In fact, Chuck said they usually drill a core sample of concrete from the site to be repaired, and run it through a lab. They then create a custom mix of repair material to not only match color, but many other characteristics of the substrate to be repaired. This was much too expensive a process for us to consider, but gives an idea how complex the whole science of concrete repair really is. Chuck did say their standard mix is good for most applications. We'll see over time....Khenpo Norgye has commented several times that he thinks we have some very fortunate Stupas here, as they have the latest technology supporting them!
We have gone to all the effort to research, track down and locate, fund raise and purchase the finest quality materials we could for this project. We may be a bunch of well wishing amateurs doing the work, but the materials were all recommended by specialists in the field (thanks again Mark Howell, who is a contractor specializing in restoration of historic Cathedrals, who directed us to our vendors!). Some might think it unfortunate we could not afford to hire a contractor to do the work professionally as well. I don't feel that way though...I think it is perfect the way it is....this way we can invite all of you to come out and share this amazing opportunity! : )
As usual I will end by saying the Stupas exist for no other reason than to bring blessings to beings, human and non. They bring healing, prosperity and peace to all that come into contact with them...whether in person, or even just their image! So please do visit them, in Poolesville or on this web page! They are always here for you, 24 hours a day, online and in person. Anyone and everyone is welcome!
